What You Need To Know (June 2023)

Salford Week of Prayer 2023

Thursday 8-Thursday 15 June

We have been involved in organising a week of prayer, joining with Christians from across Salford to worship and pray for God’s kingdom to come in greater measure in every area of the city.

Join us at 7.30pm on Thursday the 8th of June at Mount Chapel on Eccles Old Road as we start the week of prayer for Salford with worship and prayer led by people from different congregations.

Sign up via our website salfordelimchurch.org/swop2023 for one or more remote hourly prayer slots that week and download our prayer guide to help you pray strategically for current local issues of business, education, healthcare, public services, and government.

‘Adopt a street’ in your area to pray and care for, not only during that week but also afterwards. This might involve prayer walking or offering to help in some practical way, such as litter picking or mowing lawns. To register your commitment to a street and be inspired with ideas for caring and praying for it, visit neighbourhoodprayer.net

The week will end with a joint worship and prayer gathering at St. James’ Hope Church on Eccles Old Road on Thursday the 15th of June from 7.30-9pm, where we will share what we felt God has said to us during the week and commit to praying and working together for the sake of the city.

Would you like to prepare a ‘prayer station’ to offer a focus for people’s prayers at the opening service? Could you help prepare and serve refreshments at the end of the closing service?

For more information, speak to Ian.

Elim’s Summer Hog Roast

Saturday 24 June • 6-9pm • St James (Hope)

We’re restarting our traditional summer hog roast (with vegetarian/vegan goodies as an alternative).

A chance to chill together, eat magnificent food, play some games (or watch them happen) and listen to great musicians.

It’s going to be on the church grounds and in the hall. So feel free to invite others to come along with you.

PARKING WILL BE AT ELMWOOD CHURCH so that we won’t have to worry about children and cars.

Tickets are £10 for adults; £5 for children; £30 for families (up to 4 children).

Please book your tickets here. The details for how to pay for tickets you’ve booked are also on this page.

Ready to Get Baptised?

We are going to be baptising folk on Sunday 16 July as part of the morning service. If you are a follower of Jesus but are still to be baptised, please talk with Neil or Ian who will help you understand all that it means, and help you know if this would be the right moment for you.

Ladies Prayer Breakfast

Saturday 15 July • 10am • The Vine Community Hub

Come and join the Elim ladies to share food, fellowship and prayer together at the Vine. A great chance to get to know other ladies and to pray about what’s on our minds.

For more details speak to Kate Blundell.

Save the Date

Saturday 23 September • Barnstondale Centre (Wirral)

We are having our ‘NOT the Weekend Away BUT Day Away’. Over the years we have had regular weekends away as a church but with rising costs and the difficulties of finding places that can house us all, we thought that this year we would have a DAY AWAY that would include all the best bits of a weekend away at a fraction of the cost. There will be things for everyone to do – from toddlers to 90 year olds.

We will be going to Barnstondale Centre, Storeton Lane, Wirral CH61 1BX. You can see the place here: barnstondale.org

Please plan to be with us.

The Prayers of Jesus

Ian will be preaching this series in June.

Prayer. We all know it’s important but most of us struggle with it.

Someone once said that ‘our prayers reveal what is most important to us’. Prayer can also shape us to become a certain type of person.

The gospels give us a few glimpses into the prayer life of Jesus: a window into his inner life and relationship with the Father; how he prayed, what he prayed about, what was really important to him – who he was.

The surprising claim of the New Testament authors is that Jesus is still praying, and he’s praying for us! (Romans 8:34, Hebrews 7:25).

If that is true, what is he praying and what difference could it make? How might we be part of the answer to those prayers? How might our prayer life shape us to become more like Jesus?

That’s what we will be exploring in this short series.

Week 1 (June 4th): Intimate Prayer – Reading: John 17: 1-5

Week 2 (June 11th): Intercessory Prayer – Reading: John 17: 6-26

Week 3 (June 18th): Lonely Prayer – Reading: Matt 26: 36-44

Week 4 (June 25th): Defiant Prayer – Reading: Luke 23:33-46

Volunteers Needed

We are in need of more people to be trained up to operate the laptop and streaming deck on a Sunday morning.

Both are relatively simple tasks, but essential to our services running smoothly. If you could offer one Sunday every 4-6 weeks to help serve in this way, please see Ian.

The Vine Community Hub

We have now been open for 18 months and host a range of community-focussed activities at aimed at reducing isolation, improving well-being, and building community. Our volunteers do a fantastic job! For more information, visit: salfordelimchurch.org/thevine

Want to get involved? There are a number of free slots during the week and weekends (both day time and evenings) for new ministries to operate from the venue so if you have an idea and some free time, do have a chat with Ian about what might be possible.
